ATS@50 Visiting Artist: Tamiko Thiel

As part of the 50th celebration ATS will be hosting Tamiko Thiel in our visiting artist talks.
Tamiko Thiel is a visual artist exploring the interplay of place, space, the body and cultural identity. Her works encompass objects, digital prints, videos, interactive 3d virtual worlds and augmented reality. Their graduated with a B.S. from Stanford University in Product Design Engineering and then earned an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, focusing heavily on human-machine design and computer graphics. In 1991 she received a Diploma in Applied Graphics in 1991 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, specializing in video installation art.
Thiel’s 1987 CM-2 supercomputers are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art New York and the Smithsonian Institution. She has exhibited at the Istanbul Biennial, the International Center for Photography New York, the Pinakothek der Moderne Munich, the Institute of Contemporary Art London, the ZKM in Karlsruhe, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia and the Centre Pompidou. Recently she was 2017 Google VR artist-in-residence, an Eyebeam Art and Technology Center Mentor, took part in the NEA funded Boston Cyberarts commission “The Augmented Landscape” and in 2018, Thiel installed an AR piece at the Whitney Museum in New York.
