Essays on sound in Japanese art 1950s-1970s

I have seven essays spread over two upcoming issues of the online journal “Resonance: The Journal of Sound and Culture,” fall and winter 2024. These essays concern Japanese visual artists who worked with non-musical sound in works from the 1950s-1970s: Tanaka Atsuko, Murakami Saburō, Imai Norio, Hikosaka Naoyoshi, and Nomura Hitoshi. These are the first essays in English addressing the sonic dimensions of these works, the culmination (though not the termination) of research I began in 2019. They are accompanied by two newly translated essays by Japanese scholars Washida Meruro and Kaneko Tomotaro.
The fall issue no. 5.3 will be live very soon.
The winter issue no. 5.4 is scheduled to go live on December 1.
